  3. as well as other mental
  4. processes, have long since been
  5. established as suitable for, and
  6. susceptible to, scientific
  7. investigation. As we shall see,
  8. we can isolate one factor at a
  9. time and study its effect; such
  10. isolation is the very essence of
  11. scientific method. We can also
  12. make reasonably rigorous
  13. predictions about what will be
  14. perceived in a given situation
  15. and design experiments that
  16. can confirm or refute these
  17. predictions. We can repeat
  18. observations both in the same
  19. observer and in different
  20. observers. We can repeat
  21. experiments. Thus,
  22. observations or conclusions
  23. about perception are subject to
  24. the tests of reliability and
  25. verification, just as are those of
  26. other sciences.
